Help!

Since Friday, my electricity has gone off and then right back on about two dozen times (yes, ~24). This is like the beeping house problem... but worse because my electronic stuff keeps getting turned off!  More info inside.

This problem started late Friday evening.  Sometimes it's so short that it doesn't turn anything off.  Other times it turns off some of the computers and I have to reset all the clocks.  It did this all late Friday evening and night.  It stopped Saturday during the day time.  WTF?  Then it started up again late Saturday evening and here I am at 2:30am Sunday morning awake because it just happened again.

I have a UPS on one of my computers that screams every time it happens.  That's how I know it didn't happen during the day (and the fact that the clocks were all still set).  This is so maddening.

None of the circuit breakers are being tripped.  I don't have the heat on (forced air).  I haven't bought any new appliances, though I could have changed the configuration of what's plugged in where and forgotten.  If some electrical device was kicking on and pulling too much power I would think that the breaker would have tripped at least once.  And why only at night (hence, why I immediately looked at the heat)?

I'm going to call some of my EE/CS friends in the morning and bug them.  Then I'm calling the power company to bitch.  They will probably tell me it's an internal wiring problem.

Ok, back to sleep... until the next power outage.

Have you checked with your neighbours by komet (4.00 / 3) #1 Sun May 29, 2005 at 06:05:16 AM EST
whether they have the same problems? Because that's what electricity cuts are for: talking to the hot girls who live on your street.

we have a similar problem by LilFlightTest (4.00 / 1) #3 Sun May 29, 2005 at 11:09:29 AM EST
in our case, *half* the main breaker freaks out. we've learned to mostly avoid it by turning the AC off when we're running the washer or dryer. sometimes though (like yesterday) it still blows. then for some reason, if the dryer was on, it backfeeds through the other side, and our lights are like...half on.

what i have to do then is go downstairs, outside, around the back of the building, find our main breaker, and flip it off and on. then it works.

problem is, this always happens on the weekend, when i can't contact the landlord. i'd talk to the maintenance dude, since i know his pager number, but the landlord pitches a fit when we take problems directly to him (even though if there is a problem and we call her, she'll just have him call us). so then by monday, we've forgotten that we need to call her, and we have to repeat this whole thing next weekend.
