Is it a bird

Is it a plane

No! It's YAFHFC (Yet Another HuSi Fun Challenge)!

Yes: it's Friday. You're tired. You're irritable. You demand weekend satisfaction. You don't want to spend twelve hours cooking up that killer beat, or lovingly crafting the perfect short story.

Good! Then we've got exactly the fun challenge for you.

Introducing the inaugural CFC!

Chlorofluorocarbon? Chelsea Football Club?

Perish the thought. We spit on such connotations.

Inspired by the slapdash Beckettian genius that is MNS's Waggy Offering it occurred to us that we're missing a trick here.

Music, we've done.

Text, we're in the process of doing.

Where da graphical art at?! Sure, we've got album and book covers, but they've been unjustly relegated to a side show.

To at least make an attempt to prevent Cheeseburgeezer, Spacejack, Calla etc. running away with tish, we needed a graphical artform open to all, which anyone armed with a cheap graphics application and a dubious sense of humour could enter. That's right, biznatches, it's ...

The HuSi Comic Fun Challenge (Get your juvenile on)

Update [2006-4-21 13:44:8 by yicky yacky]: You need to UPLOAD YOUR STUFF, y'all. Don't post it to this diary!

Teh Rools

  • Uploaded images should be under 300 Kilobytes in size (that should be plenty)
  • Uploaded images should be no larger than 800 pixels by 600 pixels (think of the children), although smaller is good.
  • The comic must be arranged using an archetypal comic-strip layout consisting of between three (3) and six (6) panels inclusive (e.g. Dinosaur Comics). Feel free to be creative with the framing, but, as great as they can be, we don't really want one-panel cheap-shots at this stage (three-panel cheap-shots are fine!).
  • The deadline is 12:00 UTC on Friday 12th May

Do you know who rocks?

That's right. 256 rocks. Like a mo'fo' (whatever that means ...).

Courtesy of The Official 256 Husi Fun Challenge Engine version 7.4 (© 256dude), comes the mighty Comic Strip Upload Page. I'm sure you know the drill by now ...

# Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Take a look in the sky,
# LG on some shit, ni**as call him 'the fly'.

Not content with pointing out the awesome Cat with Kalashnikov image which I've been hawking all week like a derivative tosser, my pal LG delivered a double whammy by following up with this awesome map of 'Religiosity Distribution' in the US of A. It comes from this even-more-fascinating page about Mapping Religion in America.

I'm not sure if someone's MLP'd these already, but they deserve a second shot, if so.

SSR has a Constitution Fun Challenge [CFC]!

Though a couple of the SSR hard-liners have taken to calling it a NaCoWriMo.

I dunno by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #8 Fri Apr 21, 2006 at 11:45:37 AM EST

I'm open to discussion on that one. Consider it a "yes" in the short term, but be aware that you may be asked to pick your favourite when it comes to the vote.

A fine proposition! by Breaker (4.00 / 1) #5 Fri Apr 21, 2006 at 11:35:28 AM EST
However, a la Waggy, is it permissible to include photo's in the comic?  Or must it all be drawn by hand?

Photos are fine by yicky yacky (4.00 / 1) #9 Fri Apr 21, 2006 at 11:47:44 AM EST

3D meshes are fine
Hastily-doodled MS Paint things are fine
Fine art is ... err ... fine.

Why am I suspecting some Viz-like photo-story? ...

I wonder if I should continue the theme I started with Rogerborg?

What have you got against one panel? by Driusan (4.00 / 2) #13 Fri Apr 21, 2006 at 01:16:15 PM EST
Some of the best comics to ever exist in the history of history itself are one panel comics .

Nothing at all by yicky yacky (4.00 / 1) #14 Fri Apr 21, 2006 at 01:35:22 PM EST

I even linked to one (which might be a tad UKie-centric but is still quite funny).

Most fun challenges have a theme; I couldn't really think of a theme, but liked the idea of a multi-panelled comic for three reasons:

Firstly, how do you differentiate a one-panel comic from "a picture"? You don't. I was trying to avoid the situation where people just posted humorous pictures. We all get enough of those in our in-boxes.

Secondly: I was after temporal narrative of a kind; multi-panelled presentation forces a kind of progression-oriented narrative which single panels don't. Long before I was CS techie, I was a digital media techie. Framing and positioning are fascinating things.

Lastly, as the comic geeks will tell you, layout and bordering themselves are an art, and I was interesting in seeing what our creative people came up with. A 3x2 block is fine, as is a 3x1 one, but if people want to get creative with the panel shapes, positions and styles, they can.

You know the rules, dude; if you win, you get to pick the next one, and you can have one-panelled comics all the way down ...

Very true by spacejack (4.00 / 1) #20 Fri Apr 21, 2006 at 02:08:45 PM EST
about the final layouts and borders etc. My drawings are utter crap from letting my skills atrophy, but that stuff does an amazing job of legitimizing it.

Seriously, the original photo was taken at the Native American museum where they have a honking huge prism installed as the southern window.

The entire time we were there, troops of kids were running from spot to spot as the light changed and the rainbow moved.

Bonus points if you can work out what DVD I'm watching (no doubt the aspect ratio is incorrect) on the laptop.

Like, mega bonus points. Even I can't tell, and I drew the thing.

I can't believe I posted that to the competition page. It's a single panel with no point.

Can you delete it please? I didn't put a delete key in because I was sure I'd never want to delete it :(
