ATTN SF BAY INFIDELS

I will be in your fair locale the week of August 5th and need recommendations on eating and touristy stuff.

First, the preliminary details:

Base of operations is here.
I have no transportation. Everything must be accessible via public transportation.
This is technically a work trip so the fun stuff will be limited to after 5pm.

By "fun stuff" I mean family-friendly. No "whoo-hoo!" fun stuff. Perv.

And the questions:

Food. I plan on eating a lot while I'm there. You know the credo: first order of business--survival. Ideas?
Touristy stuff. Golden Gate Park... what else?
Public trans. What's the best for getting where?
Cab from the airport, or???
Do you know where I could find the nucular wessels?

I'm happy to purchase lunch for anyone with informative input.

1. Food. I plan on eating a lot while I'm there. You know the credo: first order of business--survival. Ideas?

You're right by the a huge mall between 4th and 5th. There's a massive food court on the lower level. If you go down 4th past Mission, there's the Metreon, which has its own food court. There's also a number of restaurants in the area. I can give you details if you wish.

2. Touristy stuff. Golden Gate Park... what else?

Golden Gate bridge (no where near Golden Gate Park.)...Fisherman's Wharf, but it's kind of touristy. Union Square and the Museum of Modern Art are very close to where you are. Chinatown is pretty close as well. There's a cable car station about a block away as well. (Tourists like cable cars...there useless as public transport.)

3. Public trans. What's the best for getting where?

Buses and streetcars go lots of places...lots of stops on Market. Drivers are surly though.

4. Cab from the airport, or???

BART runs straight from the airport to Powell Street Station, about a block from your hotel. Cabs will run you about $30.

5. Do you know where I could find the nucular wessels?

Sorry...after the Cold War ended, they moved them al out of state.

Naval base point Loma still has some boomers, IIRC, but ze wesses in alahmeeeda are gone. Plenty of nuke engine boats in CA though.

as for 2. there's also Lombard Street and Haight Ashbury for the tourist cred.

Eww. Mall food court sounds like McDonalds and Arbys. I'm looking for local, unique-to-SF restaurants.

The food in those things is very good, far beyond McDonalds and Arbys. In particular, "Out the Door" in San Francisco center is a really good, relatively cheap asian fusion place run by the same people that run a popular vietnamese restaurant called "the Slanted Door".

If you are looking for something unique, try "The Stinking Rose" on Columbus.

Are you looking for good, cheap food, or good expensive food?

Good food at a casual place; I won't be dressing up--just business casual. I'm willing to spend more if the food is outstanding.

For touristy things:

MOMA is good. The De Young (in Golden Gate Park) is also good.
SF Zoo is pretty awesome, but obviously that is a day-time activity.
I have been told that there is interesting night life in SF (in the clubs sense), but I have not really explored it yet.
If you have any weekend / day-time, it is possible to get up into Marin (Muir Woods for instance) if you like outdoorsy stuff using only public transortation.
Little Italy has the "beat" bookstore up there (Howl, etc) and is also entertaining to walk around in.

Food -- what's your budget? If you are willing to pay a bit, Boulevard has an awesome dessert and after-dinner drinks menu. I have never had dinner there. Another good, but less pricey place is Ti Couz which aphrael introduced me to. Have a look at yelp. I find that it is quite good for this area.

You can take trains / buses / etc everywhere if you want. But, hell, you can walk most places in SF proper if you're up to it.

is a bit of a pain in the neck for public transit.

speaking of public transit, take BART to the hotel, unless you're getting in ungodly late. it will only cost you $4, and it will come very close by.

bart is the suburban regional rail line, and it runs underground through downtown. the level between the street and bart is where the muni (sfmuni.org) trains run; the N-Judah goes out to golden gate park and the beach.

there aren't really any good public transit options for the bridge.

how do you define walking distance? i have on numerous occasions walked from the beach to the bay, so anything essems walking distancy to me.

i'm particularly fond of thirsty bear http://thirstybear.com/ (warning, loud music), a tapas bar near where you'll be. also, there's lots of food in the mall between moscone center and market.

the greasy spoon in the parking garage next to the metreon is best avoided unless you're drunk.

if you have free weekend time, i'm told alcatraz is good, although i've never been.

If television is a babysitter, the internet is a drunk librarian who won't shut up.

Just a bus, right? It's not like SF is so huge that using a bus is that insane, not compared to other cities. And if you're willing to walk, probably easier. But then, I'd probably bike over there now ...
